Writer's Block: Taking it on the road

What was the longest road trip you ever went on? How did you pass the time?

    View 754 Answers

I don't usually answer this, but it was very à propos, since my annual 2-month "road trip" is coming up. I love road trips. I love the traveling, I love the staring out at the scenery as the world goes by... I like chatting, knitting, singing and generally being hyper to keep the driver awake... It's a tough job. And I'm glad I don't have to drive, most of the time.

For those who were asking, I am leaving JUNE 20th. I am working Sunday this weekend, but if you want to drop by the studio to see where I work and what I do, we're having an open house. I managed to wrangle that since I needed Thursday off to drive to Gatineau to see my papa get the mérite du barreau and snob around with lawyers. Am I proud of my papa, why yes, yes I am :) I will also have June 11 to 19th off (although I may go in the weekend of the 11th depending on what's going on), so that's really when to see me. Or in evenings after work? I usually finish at about 6-6:30 PM

And before I leave, this is what needs to get done in my non-work life:
Take Mom and Solange bra shopping (apparently I have earned a job as the bra whisperer)
    Pack
    SLEEP
Clean up my stuff that is training around the house
Clean room, possibly put furniture up on craigslist
    Make Smirkus curtains
    Buy zippers
    See people
    SLEEP
    Play with Louka
Talk to Jay about coming 3x a week
    Go to graduation ceremony thing
    See people
    SLEEP

To those reading this for Wolf Twins, I intend to write while on tour. That's all I can really promise, at this point.

    Love you aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall!

    Birthday wish list
Because Masha asked me to. Brain is dead after long day and NO SUPPER THANKS LOUKA YOU UNGRATEFUL BRAT.

    The list.
Jigsaw puzzles, usually 1000+ pieces unless it's a puzzle with unusually shaped pieces that's really difficult
Books. Maybe Jean-Pierre Charland's historical fiction books. Those look cool. If not, L'Histoire du Québec par les textes or something else like that. I also have an amazon wishlist available here: http://amzn.com/w/2PQNTXX3W3E29. The underwear book in particular is interesting.
More hours in a day. That would so be useful, right now XD
I have an obsession with good china, so pretty teacups and stuff like that makes me squee
Tea. With caffeine. It will disappear fast and make me very pleased
    Red pens. Of doom.
Wolfy things. I like big wolfy plushies. And coyote plushies. And Foxie plushies. As long as they're big-ish and huggable.
Spending time together things are always fun
The list is now officially long enough.

    FYI
If I do not return calls/emails/whatever and generally drop off the face of the earth for a while, it is because I am working 10-13 hour days, most of the week. I shall be back next week when spring break allows for non-death. Part time job + stage = wtf am I thinking. Also, all my jobs are made of happy and I am very pleased. So there is no cause for worry, I am just either working or passed out in a corner somewhere.

    Trying to stay positive
Stolen from Masha's LJ, to try and reflect on what was a particularly shitty year and try to put a positive spin on things.

Top 10 good things of 2010:

    2. Smirkus tour
    3. NYC trip with Ribs
    4. Managing to get a first teaching contract and surviving

    6. Seeing my book bound as a paperback with my name on it and everything
    7. Swing dance class
    8. The Notre-Dame teaching staff
    9. Holographic gold ric-rac
    10. ... I got nothing.

Top 5 bad things of 2009 (Hard to pick just 5):

    lack of motivation
    3. School and all its pointlessness. And all the papers I had to write.

    Unwind
So today's my first real day off since April, about. Or not. Maybe my first real day off will be once I'm home and sleeping in my own bed again. But I didn't have to work today. That's something, right?

I'm feeling surprisingly ok about leaving the circus, this year, no sadness, no regrets. It's like I just pushed a pause button and it'll be all there again when I'm ready to push play. I come out of the experience changed as usual, and with new ideas about what to do in life. I always find it funny when people admire how planned out, how certain I am about my direction in life. It's easy to be certain when you've chosen the simple route and it's easy to be happy when there's so many things you love doing. I accomplished what I needed to do there, I leave with a better understanding of myself and an appreciation of how much I need to get done. I'm going to miss my extended family during the year, but there have been promises of visits, plans made and it's never goodbye, just "see you down the road". I've got one more year until I'm out of here, on whatever great adventure that might be.

Load out, jump, set up, shows, lather rinse repeat
It,s hard to explain working at the circus and the particular buoyant, happy feeling that accompanies that. Despite how tired I am this year, there is still a particular joy, a particular pride that comes with the work and the feeling of community that there is especially in the staff side of things. Caravaning to lot today, following the pie car, Amity's car, the tent and Nat and Bea's trailer drove that home that much more. Chris is right, we need "circus" passports, because we are our own country, one that transcends national borders. I'm off lot, right now, getting in touch with reality, just to ground myself. I'll probably regret this when I have to spend extra time doing laundry tonight, but that's ok. Today was jump, which means new town, new lot, same old story. Poor Steve had to put up with my caffeinated chatter and new townies gawked as we set things up, everyone doing their own thing, working hard or recuperating for the next few days. Tomorrow I'll set my racks up, sort laundry, give French lessons back stage and hawk cotton candy for concessions, competing with the clowns in the hawking olympics to see who can make the most money by the end of tour.

Day of shows is rarely the time the circus feels the most alive to me, though. It's during tear down, everyone moving in the best kind of organised chaos, bringing things down, preparing to move, packing everything away that makes me love this work the most. Carry this, pack that, hurry, hurry, we have a deadline, we're playing at finishing earlier and earlier, being as efficient as possible. The night seems too short a break, barely separating tear down from Jump, the day we all haul ass to the next lot. Wake up, batten down the hatches, lock up, coil hose, coil cable, no thinking, so much to do. Drive for an hour, set up again, everything is different, but the same at the same time. It makes your head spin, trying to remember where you are, what day it is, what time it is... Everything is divided into circus time, days are just Jump, shows and Tear Down, hours become Meal, Call or Show. Nothing else matters. Get your work done in those down times, be smart about time, without ever really thinking of it.

    I never want to leave.

    Life has gotten interesting
So. Note to self. Before accepting a contract, find out what it entails. I have about 370 students to teach, I'm starting at 8AM on monday and I have no clue what the prof intended for them. I have some of his materials, but no class notes and the ppt presentations are still at school, in the director's possession. I want those so bad, I have no clue what I'm going to be doing with my class, on monday morning...

    Still to do this weekend!
    1. clean bird cage
    2. clean snake cage
    3. clean room
    4. Write 10-page paper for Geo class
    5. Make amazing duck
    6. Go shopping for work clothes + better work shoes.
    7. Figure out how to entertain 37 kids 1st period monday morning.
    8. NOT DIE.

    Life is strange
    I is pleased.

Ok, so people remember that I lost this contract with the collège and was pretty bummed about it? Well, life apparently still wanted me to have my remplacement experience all the same. One of their sec. 1 history teachers has been hospitalised. They're a little desperate. So much for me having free time. But I get to have classes of my own again! Yayness!

    Interesting observations
I love dance class. As much as I adore the actual physical movement and the fun of it, I also appreciate the sudden moments of clarity about myself.

Dear life, please to stop laughing at me
I am slightly annoyed. Life seems to be enjoying dangling good things in front of my face and then deciding to balance it out just for kicks by doing bad things to me. Last Friday, the car died again. So I had to bring it in to the garage, which I did on Monday. Alternator and its belt again. More on that later. Tuesday I'm totally out of it because I pulled an all nighter to give in this paper that I had to give in to my chargée de cours who is en grève and there's a huge drama around that because some people are giving it in, some aren't... And I had an 8h30-11h30 class, so I stayed up until 2PM. I walked the dog while wearing a t-shirt, which was really wtf. I mean really. We were born in the middle of a snow storm. Being warm in a t-shirt on our birthday was really weird. Then we went out for our birthday and I got sloshed, which was annoying because I am not a social drunk, I just want to curl up in bed and sleep. I was therefore totally out of it on Wednesday too.

Of course Wednesday is when the garage decides to call. They had figured out on Tuesday that it's the alternator that I got in Greensboro that's the issue, which is fine, they're going to replace it, blah blah blah. Wednesday Mario calls me, waking me up to ask me where my kill switch is on the car. I blink and try to get my foggy brain to cooperate. Kill switch? WTF is a kill switch? Apparently my car has an anti-theft system that is now keeping my car mechanic from starting my car. I was totally panicked about this until I find out what a kill switch is and authorise them to do whatever is necessary to deal with this issue and I go get myself some water to try and revive a bit. By this time, it's 9AM and I went to sleep at 3AM and haven't slept too well. Hallucinations while half awake are just one reason I don't do large amounts of alcohol often.

Anyway I revived enough to go to my job interview at the collège, which I aced, I think. That was good. And fun. And then I got my new student card done, which is really good since I have to go to the library and besides that, the picture is really good, a lot better than my old one. Much cool. I get home to find my Smirkus hire email in my inbox, which rocked. Then I passed out for another few hours. Had to miss dance class, I was so out of it, which was sad sad.

Friday I still haven't heard back from the mechanic. I'm a little worried until I mention this to mom and she remembers that they called and that it's ready. I'm like yaaaaaay, let's go and get it! So we go and get it and I start chatting with the guy and the desk, who is really nice and polite and non-condescending, which is kinda why I always go to this garage because they don't do the whole "You stupid little girl" thing. So we're chatting and I explain to him what happened. When I tell him where I found the alternator belt, his eyes get as wide as dinner plates and he starts laughing his ass off. I suspect he still hasn't stopped. There apparently is no conceivable way for it to have gotten there. My doors are locked, no one could have put it in there. Very, very, very sketchy. He suggested an exorcist. There's still a bit of a rattle, but the squeak is 100% gone and I will get the rattle looked at when i go get my tires changed in a few months.

I also got the news today that the semester might be prolonged because of the strike. This might mean loss of the job at the collège. Which would suck royally for many, many reasons. I am actually considering dropping my three classes that would be prolonged, but the fact that that might add an extra year to my diploma and that's a significant amount of money that I wouldn't be getting back for tuition and that I'd have to pay a second time. Sigh. Decisions decisions.

So that was week of weird. Off to dance class, now, to get my mind off of things!

I love dance class. I love twirly skirts. I love floating around on the dance floor or being picked up and twirled around. Or grabed and twirled around the dance floor. Floating on clouds.

Or maybe that's endorphins 1h15 class + 45 minutes of walking fast with husky = lots of happys

    Heartbroken
I got this email today. I'm heartbroken. That could be Louka's family, for all I know.

    Dear SPCA Emergency Shelter Volunteers,

Thank you again for all your ongoing help with the current seizure operation. I'm writing for two reasons:

    1) Probably due to the length of the seizure, the amount of volunteers has trailed off over the past weeks. This means that these very active dogs are sitting in their cages for about 23.5 hours every day, as there isn't enough staff to walk the dogs. The court date has been set for February 19, and we expect to have them for several days after that. If you can spare any time to either walk these dogs or socialize with them in the back room--especially Mon-Fri during the day--the dogs would greatly appreciate it.

    2) We now have a Wish List that will be updated in real-time. Please forward this email on to anyone who you think can help.
    Thank you.
    Dave

Email me to see the wishlist and email spca.emergencyshelter@gmail.com if you want to volunteer. Please do volunteer. I know I will, next week. If you get newspaper at home, save it after you're done with it and donate it. Any rags and bleach, any brand, are high on their list.

    What's in a name
    Bon.
I don't think I've subjected you guys to my rants about cultural identity and the whole quebecoise/anglophone duality thing that I've been dealing with, especially since I got home from the states. Especially since I now have two citizenships. I'm starting to be sick and tired of correcting people over my name and never hearing it properly, wincing every single time roll call happens and I hear it massacred once again, resigning myself to the fact that they'll never once get it right ever... I'm starting to think that it'll just be easier to start using my middle name professionally. And at school.

    All hail la Reine Margot?

    Growing up
It's always funny when you suddenly blink and realise you're a very different person and so are your friends. Especially your friends. I mean you feel your own evolution somewhat, but it's funny seeing people you haven't seen in ages and one's expecting her first kid, others have changed drastically and you can just relate even more... It's exciting and scary. "You're graduating next semester!" "You're being called Madame every day!"

    Craziness
